The Other Side of Kerr Lake (Longview COE)

Sunday October 24, 2021

So, we've recently started camping Sat-Mon instead of Fri-Sun. And it's nice because campgrounds generally clear out on Sunday mornings, so we frequently get lots of privacy and silence and serenity Sunday nights and Monday mornings.

Saturday we arrived. The campsite was a steep uphill grade with lots of gravel, and required a really sharp turn (backwards!). Rust, Rick, and I all struggled terribly. There was panic. Tires spun in gravel. Camper careened toward picnic table. Multiple Mulligans were required and the new (way after-market) rear view camera we got just didn't help much. It might've been the scariest and least "expert" back-in we've done so far.

But finally we won. Longwood Park is great — very pretty and lots of waterfront sites, mature trees, and it's a Corps of Engineers (? right ?) project, so that's sorta cool.

But.
Site 15 is not for us.
And

If you don't have a boat, there's not a whole lot to do. We made a really nice trip though with a 2 mile walking tour of all 3 campsite loops (since there really aren't any hiking trails!). we had a great fall weather, 2 Dutch oven campfire dinners that both turned out great, if I do say so myself, and no rain.

Oh! Almost forgot... we met a family that were probably the owners of an actual puppy mill...maybe. They had an ancient Yorkie who walked with the kind of difficulty caused by spinal or neuro injuries (she fell down a flight of stairs, according to the grand kids) and an adult female poodle and a 6 month poodle puppy and a litter of Yorkie puppies and a litter of poodle puppies, all of whom were whelped at the campsite 2 nights earlier. It was hard keeping my judgemental, disapproving voice quiet, but I managed!
