Neuseway Nature Park

Sunday April 2, 2017

Rick will be the first to tell you that he's not "a zipper." He isn't a big fan of surprises or any other thing that's sudden or unplanned.

For example, if we're headed somewhere and I see some attraction on the side of the road that I'd like to check out, my saying, "Hey! Turn in here, real quick!" can cause him a near panic-attack.

So, imagine my surprise when, on a Friday afternoon, I was able to talk him into an impromptu over-nighter for the following day!

Neuseway Nature Park is a county park in Kinston, NC, about an hour from our house. Last fall's hurricane (Matthew) flooded it dramatically, and as a result the park's main attractions (a planetarium! and a nature center) were still closed for repairs. But many of the campsites — which had full hookups — were right on the river, and they were only $10/night! ("Honor System" style... no reservations taken: just slide the money in the mail slot of the unmanned office when you leave!)

The fire ring at our particular site was... missing. So we made our own out of cinder block chunks and rocks. It wasn't pretty, but it worked!

Although the main features of the park weren't available, we saw a little rose garden, an un-releasable captive great horned owl (who hated April and click and flapper in disgust every time we walked past), a life-sized plastic horse, a huge concrete tortoise ("Martimer"), a fountain that petrified the dog, a human sundial, and a bunch of Yorkshire Terriers who shared the owl's opinion of April.

I think we managed to get through setup and takedown without significant mishaps. April loved wading in the river and (obsessively?) chomping at the water. The weather was perfect and I'm pretty sure we'll be returning.

UPDATE: More flooding at the end April re-flooded the entire campground. :-(
