With a little help from our friends...

Friday April 14, 2017

It took us about 2.5 hours to get to Kerr Lake State Recreation Area (Satterwhite Point) for Rick's annual birthday camping excursion. Our friends Darci and Kyle (and their dog Miles, aka April's boyfriend) joined us and it was an exceptionally fun trip!

We arrived Friday night. The campsites were big and woodsy, and had a decent view of the lake. (Next time, we'll reserve a waterfront site!) Electric and water (but no sewer) hookups in a really pretty well-maintained campground.

A few highlights:

  • Rick planned a pretty bad hike (mostly on the highway) to a "marina" that truly disappointed (mostly commercial, no real public access). But we all had a great time proving and then disproving the existence of G-d, making up lame songs (♫The guard shack is a little place where we can get more firewood... ♪ ) and picking on Rick for being such a bad hike-designer.
  • Walking Tacos Friday night! (Kyle: "I cannot stop eating this!")
  • Planning the downfall of Darci's terrible co-worker. (Cocaine in her desk! No, crystal meth! Kneecap-breaking was not excluded from consideration, either!)
  • Tiny, terrifying, hard-to-steer inflatable boat and the hilarity that resulted.
  • Cards Against Humanity (D & K gifted rick the supplemental "Jew Pack.")
  • Bacon-wrapped filet medallions — mic drop — with enough leftovers to up our Sunday morning bag omelette game for our farewell breakfast.
  • "Moscow Mules" with stainless steel straws, courtesy of Darci (Vodka, crushed ice, and ginger beer)
  • Absolutely perfect weather

We did have a glitch with the black-water sensor in that, as soon as we arrived, it read 2/3 full. We knew that couldn't be right, but it was nerve-wracking. Upon returning home, Rick did some research and learned that it is a common problem with low-end sensors and that until we're able to upgrade we can probably clean said sensor by putting a bunch of ice and a little water into the tank and letting it slosh around while we roll down the road.

We're gonna try it and we're also putting "sensors that don't suck" on the Roxy List.

PS: I got Rick an electric tongue jack for his birthday! We weren't able to install it in time for this trip, but it'll be ready to go next time!
