Myrtle Beach State Park

Friday April 13, 2018

It seems odd to be be in Myrtle Beach for anything but a Sapir Family Vacation…. But here we go! We spent our annual Rick’s Birthday Camping Weekend at Myrtle Beach State Park (MBSP) — an oasis in the middle of the tourist mecca that is Myrtle Beach.

We decided to to take the non-Interstate route to the beach. It took us a bit longer, but it was certainly less stressful. We both took Friday as a vacation day, so we were able to leave by 1pm and arrived at the park by 5pm. MBSP is a huge park with 6 camping loops. The spots were wooded and shady (and we had full hookups), but much closer together than we are used to. But even without the hammocks, it was going to be a great weekend.

Happy Birthday!

Friday night’s dinner was beef-in-armor… and birthday cake! We enjoyed a nice walk on the beach (April loves the waves) and relaxed in front the campfire. The weather was perfect and so was the company!

For some reason, I woke up early on Saturday morning. I let Molly sleep in, and took April for a sunrise walk on the beach. We found:
April meets a jellyfish.
April meets a jellyfish.
  • Dead jellyfish,
  • Sea foam,
  • And lots of other dogs

Molly was just stirring when we returned. We drank our coffee and ate our breakfast (bag omelettes, of course!) and contemplated the rest of the day.

We enjoyed a nice 2.5 mile hike through the park. Luckily, most of it was in the woods (as the day had started to heat up). April, of course, loves walking in the woods, smelling all the new smells, and leaving her mark everywhere she can. We returned to Roxy (and her AC) for lunch, then it was off to the beach for a bit. We didn’t bring swimsuits (the water was VERY cold), but that didn’t stop us from wading in, past our knees.

If you remember from our other beach (and lake) trips, April LOVES to chase and bite the waves. We have to be careful, otherwise she ends up with a tummy full of salt water.

We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the rest of the park, the camp store, the nature center (unfortunately it was closed), and walking around admiring everyone else’s rig. We spoke with other hybrid owners and got some hints.
Dinner was chicken packets and adult beverages. All-in-all, another perfect day camping.

We took Sunday morning nice and slow. We enjoyed our coffee and a long walk along the beach before we started breaking camp. Checkout time is 11am…. And they’re serious about it. MBSP is the most popular state park and there is always a line to get in.

On the way back home, in the middle of nowhere, Molly decided that she had to use the bathroom... urgently. Because we were traveling the back roads, there wasn’t a rest area to stop. Luckily, we were towing our own bathroom!
